HARBIN SUMMER SCHOOL

In July 2017, the school of architecture of HIT held the Seventh International Joint Workshop
on the summer semester. In the Joint Workshop of this year, Prof. Arno Pronk from TU/e together
with Prof. Peng Luo from HIT as the teachers of this wirkshop, focusing on research and design
of special multiple ice structure, launched a course for 3 weeks.

POLYHYDRIC ICE STRUCTURE

Students have to design a mega large polyhydric ice structure. The structure will be made by freezing a cable structure at the inside of an inflatable. After the cable structure can stand on it selve the inflatbable support structure at the outside can be removed en reused for new structures.

Teaching process

Design ice structure

From the point of view of the city, a mega ice structure is supposed to be designed and the activities
of the winter city square are planned to stimulate the vitality of the place. The whole teaching process
is divided into three stages: experiment and understanding of technology, application and expression
of design, and synthesis and expansion of knowledge.
